The Science & Benefits of CBD

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol (ca-nab-i-di-ol) is a non-intoxicating compound found in the cannabis plant.  CBD— alongside THC and other cannabinoids— work with additional plant compounds like terpenes (the smelly stuff) to form a potent remedy for pain, sleep, anxiety and countless other conditions.  The cannabinoids (compounds found in cannabis) are found in the sticky resin pockets that form on the outside of the mature flowering female plants.  This sticky resin a.k.a trichomes, hold the medicinal properties of the plant, and is also where the majority of the CBD is found.  While there are small amounts of CBD in the stems and stalks, the majority of the CBD resides in the trichomes on the mature flowers, or buds.

How does CBD work?

Our bodies are wired for CBD with receptors that are located in our central and peripheral nervous systems, this system is called the endocannabinoid system and regulates many critical body functions such as sleep, pain, hunger, inflammation and more. By ingesting CBD via oral, dermal or sub lingual methods our bodies are activated to naturally balance whatever system is out of balance. This is, theoretically, why CBD appears to be helpful across a broad array of ailments.

What is CBD Isolate?

If you’ve ordered CBD online or picked it off the shelf of a store, chances are you were getting CBD Isolate. CBD has been in high demand, which has led to the isolation of the compound from other parts of the plant.  This compound is referred to as CBD “isolate”.  This form of CBD is a white crystal with up to 99.5% purity.  In chemistry we refer to this type of compound as a “neat” standard.  In this form, everything but the CBD has been taken away from the plant. Let’s sit with that for a minute. If the purpose of using the plant is to obtain its contents, and we know that it takes different parts of the plant working together, known as the entourage effect, to have the highest efficacy – why would we strip away the plant and isolate the CBD? Answer: MONEY. You can make more products and therefore more money if you use CBD isolate as your source. 🤯

 Know Your Source

Mountain Meadow Farms uses a whole plant extract when making products. The oil contains trace amounts of THC and other cannabinoids to ensure the maximum efficacy to our users.  Our hemp flower is grown and extracted in Colorado by a licensed, state certified grower/producer.  We source only the highest quality whole plant extract for all of our products. Unlike CBD isolate, whole plant extract contains CBD concentrations of 50-60% CBD alongside other cannabinoids, terpenes and plant waxes.  The plant is extracted with ethanol and the ethanol is evaporated off.  The resulting crude oil is dosed into our products.  All of our products are made with organic ingredients.

We keep it simple because we believe the plant knows what she’s doing when making this medicine.
